TL;DR: Brisbane’s petrol cycle just topped out. The metro ULP median climbed from a 152.7 c/L trough on 29 June to 199.9 c/L on 31 July — a 32-day climb — and it’s sat flat at 199.9 for three days now. That’s the peak. As of this morning 280 of the 477 metro stations we track (59%) are pricing at 199.9 or higher, and only 11 are under 185. But the cheapest in town is 178.5 — Liberty and Pearl Energy sites along the Ipswich Road / Rocklea strip — a 21.4 c/L gap, about $12 on a 55-litre tank. Wholesale (TGP) is 184.7, so the 199.9 pack is charging 15 cents over wholesale while the cheap independents are selling below it. If you can reach a cheap site, do; if your tank can wait, the only way out of a peak is down.
There’s a moment in every Brisbane fuel cycle where it stops being worth arguing about and starts being worth acting on. This is that moment. The pack has bunched at the top, the spread between the cheapest and dearest is as wide as it gets, and the next move is down. So this isn’t a “does the cycle exist” piece — it’s a where-are-we-right-now one.
What the feed shows
Every number here is the Queensland Government price feed — what each station reported charging, not a guess at the bowser. We take the Brisbane-metro stations inside a box around the CBD (about 480 report on any given day), carry each station’s last known ULP price forward, and take the median across the panel: one honest number per day.
Here’s the last seven weeks:
Two things stand out. First, the climb was slow — 32 days from trough to peak, a steady grind of a cent or two most days, not the overnight price restoration you see in Sydney or Melbourne. Second, it has stopped. Three flat days at 199.9 with the pack piled in behind it is what a top looks like.
The pack has bunched — but the floor hasn’t moved with it
At a trough, everyone’s within a few cents of each other. At a peak, the field splits in two: the majority jump to the round-number ceiling, and a stubborn handful of independents sit it out. That’s exactly where we are.
- 280 of 477 metro stations (59%) are at 199.9 or higher.
- Just 11 are under 185.
- The cheapest in the metro right now is 178.5 c/L, at Liberty Annerley, Liberty Moorooka South, Pearl Energy Moorooka and U-Go Rocklea — all clustered on the Ipswich Road / Rocklea run.
That’s a 21.4 c/L gap between the cheapest station and the pack. On a 55-litre fill that’s about $12; on a 70-litre ute tank it’s over $15 — for the same regular unleaded, on the same morning, a fifteen-minute drive apart.
The tell: the peak is above wholesale, the floor is below it
The wholesale benchmark (the Terminal Gate Price) for Brisbane ULP was 184.7 c/L on 31 July. Line that up against the retail field and the peak gives itself away:
- The 199.9 pack is selling 15.2 cents over wholesale. That’s the fat margin that only exists at the top of a cycle.
- The 178.5 floor is 6.2 cents under wholesale — genuine loss-leading to pull volume through the door.
When the cheapest stations in town are selling below what it costs to buy the fuel, you’re not early in a cycle. You’re at the end of one.
What to do this week
The cycle has one move left from here, and it’s down — the last lap fell from the high 160s into the 29-June trough over a couple of weeks, and this one will roll over the same way. But “down” is gradual in Brisbane, so the play depends on your tank:
- Running low? Don’t pay 199.9. Eleven stations are under 185 and the Ipswich Road / Rocklea independents are at 178.5 — a $12 tank. That beats waiting, because the discount from here is a slow drip, not a cliff.
- Half a tank or better? You can afford to let it ride. You’re at the ceiling; every day from here the pack is more likely to blink than to climb. Top up just enough to be comfortable and refill properly once the field starts cracking below 195.
- Either way, open Pinly Fuel before you pull in — at a peak the map is the difference between the 199.9 on the corner and the 178.5 two suburbs over.
The one thing not to do is fill a full tank at 199.9 on autopilot. That’s the single most expensive habit in the Brisbane cycle, and this is the single most expensive week to do it.
