TL;DR: With the cycle at its peak and the metro median stuck on 199.9, the cheapest regular unleaded in Brisbane this morning is clustered on one corridor: the Ipswich Road run south from Annerley through Moorooka and Rocklea to Acacia Ridge. Four sites are at 178.5 — Liberty Annerley, Liberty Moorooka South, Pearl Energy Moorooka and U-Go Rocklea — and there’s a dozen more under 186. That’s up to 21 cents under the pack, about $12 a tank. The catch: it’s not the suburb that’s cheap, it’s the operators. The Shell, Ampol and EG sites on the very same strip are charging the full 199.9. Follow the independents, not the postcode.
Every cycle, when the majors pile onto 199.9, people ask me the same thing: where’s it still cheap? And every cycle the answer starts in the same place — the Ipswich Road corridor, the light-industrial run down through Moorooka and Rocklea. Today it’s textbook. Here’s the whole strip, cheapest first.
The cheap end (all independents)

A dozen sites under 186 within a few minutes of each other. Fill anywhere along here and you’re paying mid-180s while most of the city pays 199.9.
Same road, 21 cents apart
Here’s the part people miss. This corridor isn’t a cheap zone — the majors on the exact same road are at the ceiling. Look at the gap between the independents and the branded sites a few hundred metres away:
Shell Reddy Express on Ipswich Road at Rocklea: 199.9. EG Ampol at Moorooka: 199.9. Ampol at Wacol, further down the same road: 199.9. Drive past them to a Liberty or a Pearl Energy and you save the better part of a tank’s worth of coffee.
Why this strip, every time
It’s not magic and it’s not a fluke of one week. The Ipswich Road / Rocklea corridor is dense with independent and unbranded operators — Liberty, Pearl Energy, U-Go, Solo, Metro, Freedom, Mega — sitting cheek-by-jowl with truck stops and high-turnover sites. Independents don’t ride the top of the cycle the way the majors do; pack a bunch of them onto one road and that road becomes the cheapest in town, especially at a peak when the branded sites have all jumped.
So the takeaway isn’t “memorise these addresses.” It’s the rule underneath: cheap fuel follows independent operators, and they cluster. Annerley–Moorooka–Rocklea is Brisbane’s best-known cluster, but the same logic finds them anywhere.
If you’re on the southside, this strip is your peak-week fill. If you’re not, do what it teaches: open Pinly Fuel, sort by price, and drive to the cheap pins — they’ll be independents, and there’ll usually be a few of them together.
